Is It Time To Change My iPhone?
I know these Apple devices are old but many people have them for kids to use or maybe you are not the sort to insist on the latest device. If you have old Apple devices please read on to see the impact to you.
- iPhone 5
- iPad 4th generation
If you have either of the above two devices please ensure you upgrade to at least iOSÂ 10.3.4 or newer ASAP
- iPhone 4S
- iPad mini
- iPad 2
- iPad with Retina Display
- iPad 3rd & generation
If you have either of the above five devices please ensure you upgrade to at least iOSÂ iOS 9.3.6 or newer ASAP.
Whilst many people have traded in their devices since iPhone 5 stopped officially being sold in 2013 there are still about 3% of the total iPhone usage globally using the 5 or 4S.
Why does my old Iphone not work?Â
The reason for this issue is that there is a problem with GPS that occurs every 1,024 weeks (19.7 years) that means without a patch the date on your device resets to zero. Since 19.7 years ago iPhones etc did not exist it is understandable that they did not plan for this.
What will happen to my iphone?
What this does mean is if by 12:00 a.m. UTC on November 3, 2019 if you have not updated the above devices to the minimum new iOS the device will no longer connect to the internet. They will effectively be redundant and the only way to perform the update will be to connect them to a computer and update that way.
If you have one of these devices you should have been receiving regular updates like the below:-
Don’t wait update ASAP so you can continue to use your device. It is always recommended that you keep your devices updated to the latest operating system patches so that not only can you benefit from the new features but you will also be protected from the ever increasing number of cyber attacks.
